Corvallis @ Crescent Valley OSAA 5A Volleyball 10-15-2024
Bragging rights for the city of Corvallis, OR were on the line as the Spartans of Corvallis High traveled across town to take on the Raiders of Crescent Valley. In the end, it was the Raiders who came away with the 3-0 win.
The Raiders who came into the match with a 21-2 overall record seem primed for a possible 3-peat as 5A State Champs, while their cross town rivals, the Spartans at 11-5, are sitting just behind the Raiders in the Mid-Willamette Conference rankings.
In the first set, CV looked a little out of sorts as they are currently without Bella Jacobson (#7, Senior, OH) who is fighting off some knee pain, so the team flow didn't seem super smooth. Points went back and forth and it seemed Corvallis had answers to most of what Crescent Valley was trying to do, but at 25-18, the Raiders took the opener.
The second set started out like the first, points back and forth. For Corvallis, Malique Sweet (#5, Senior, OP) and Alexa Schnell (#7, Senior, S) seemed to be all in the right places at the right times.
Then something happened as Crescent Valley, anchored by Kamden Mitchell (#5, Senior, S, seen below), seemed to change gears. Big blocks by Emma Yenchik (#13, Junior, MB/RS) and big hits by Georgia Vawter (#9, Sophomore, OH) and Ashlin Lockman (#11, Junior, RS/OH) seemed to turn the feel of the whole game around. Corvallis had earlier been solid and sound, but started committing unforced errors.
To me, (someone who knows absolutely nothing about Volleyball), it seems if Corvallis were able to put a full game together and limit their unforced errors, they could make some waves in the state tournament.
Crescent Valley, when they get back to full strength look like they have a shot at a 3-peat.
